    推荐信的标准递交方式是封在盖有封口章的信封内并由推荐你的教授在信封背面签名。但是现在很多专业都要求提供推荐人的EMAIL地址,以便直接联系推荐人。你得明白这样对你来说是否可行,同时也得让你的推荐人知道学校可能直接联系他。

    5. 写作样本

    有的专业会要求提交写作样本:一份能够说明申请人如何构建文学作品或如何立论。通常情况,这个写作样本可以是五年之内的大学课程的一份作业。文章长度可以是3至12页不等。在准备研究生预科期间,你应该为写作样本搜集材料,需要注意的是,写作样本可以是从一份较长的文章中提取的。在研究生预科期间,我们会再修改、陈述以做到最好。

     6. 清单中其他方面的需要:

    * 请备份护照,签证,医疗处方。留一份给你的联络人自己带一份;
    * 带上插头、电源板和适配器。
    * 为笔记被电脑带上一个无线适配器或者带一个USB无线适配器;
    * 最后请为所有需要的材料做一个拷贝备份。.

    7. 要带的衣物:

    * 伞
    * 保暖的春季或者秋季外套
    * 保暖的冬季外套
    * 冬天的靴子、帽子和手套
    * 特殊场合穿的民族服装或者更正式的.
    * 户外运动穿的保暖运动服
    * 舒适的运动鞋

    准备好各个季节的衣服,因为夏天的白天你只需穿很薄的衣服,但是晚上你可能就需要穿单夹克衫或者毛衣。

    II: 如果你已经在约克

    这里是一些小提示,它们能够使你在这里的七个月过得健康、成功、理智。

    1. 居住信息

    在研究生预备项目刚开始时,学生们会住在约克大学校园里的本科生宿舍里,可步行去教室、健身房、校园餐厅、学生中心、图书馆以及计算机室。这些地方都有配备冰箱和微波炉的独立房间。英语语言学院的工作人员会辅助新生填写住宿表格、调查表和缴费表格。住宿费用是每天25加元。在宿舍住居期间,学生会得到YU卡,此卡是学生在约克大学的身份凭证同时也是校园内的借记卡。须注意的是,这张卡会扣除头两个月的住宿费共计625加元,且不能退款。卡上的金额只能在校园内的餐厅和校园购物中心——York Lanes消费使用。

    2. 开一个银行账户

     国际学生会觉得校园里有很多银行和取款机是很方便的。请注意,你可能需要一个VISA或者万事达卡在网上买东西、付款或者注册大学住宿。

    3. 租房子

    等他们在学校和多伦多熟悉之后,许多学生喜欢搬出宿舍租他们自己的房子。参加前几期约克大学研究生预备项目的同学通常都获得了一个由城市租户协会联盟提供的研讨会(FMTA) (the Federation of Metro Tenants Associations)。城市租户协会联盟是多伦多一个帮助租户了解自己的权利并为租户的利益呼吁的非营利性组织。这个研讨会是为了帮助学生了解多伦多的租房法律而且给他们可供选择的信息。详情请见http://www.torontotenants.org/

    4. 在校园里的饮食

    在国外最困难的事情之一莫过于找到熟悉的和健康的饭吃。尤其对于在学校居住的学生来说,这更是一个挑战。同时, 经历如此重要的充满挑战的时期所承受的压力也使得保证饮食健康成为一件特别重要的事。早起参加研究生预备项目的同学都参加了一个由约克健康教育及推广小组(约克大学与健康专业相关的本科生组织)管理的组织,为的是获得学校里哪里的饭比较好以及怎么做。详情请见 http://www.yorku.ca/scld/healthed/ YP3 staff will also help participants find and get to appropriate grocery stores in Toronto. See http://www.yorku.ca/yorkint/intlstud/new/grocery.htm for a list of some places to shop for food.

    5. 健身俱乐部

    缓解在异国他乡学习压力的最好方式就是保证有足够的体育锻炼。 事实上,在约克的七个月学习时间能让你有足够时间达到你想要的健身目标。尽管你的日程安排看上去已经很满了,但是大多数人都认为有规律的健身能使人事半功倍。约克大学有相当大的健身房,而且费用比多伦多其它的健身俱乐部的价格低很多。研究生预科的学生可以在Tait McKenzie中心按B类会员收费标准购买一个8个月会员卡:

    6. 保险

    购买一份适合自己的健康保险对于在海外求学的学生来说是必需的。英语语言学院与Student Guard保险公司合作提供这项服务。只要你购买了健康保险,就不用再支付任何医疗方面的费用。我们建议你格外注意你选择的健康保险包括哪些内容,不包括哪些内容,以及运作程序是怎样的。英语语言学院可以提供政策解读的服务,你可以发电子邮件到yueli@yorku.ca; 也可以在线访问Student Guard,网址: http://www.studentguard.com

    7. 融入英语语言学院、约克大学以及多伦多的机会

    研究生预备项目的一个重要部分就是在约克大学和多伦多建立起来的的关系网络。这些关系网络,包括结识的人和经历的事,这将帮助你提高英语能力,了解北美大学文化,甚至能成为你履历中重要的一项内容。研究生预科的指导老师会灵活地调配你的课程安排以便你参加各类尤其是有意义的活动。研究生预科学生可以参加的团体和活动包括如下:

    * 参加英语语言学院其它课程的各类俱乐部和旅行活动,结识来自其它国家的英语语言学院的学生。

    * 与约克大学健康教育与推广小组的学生见面,参加他们每周组织的活动“Mellow Monday” 和 “Wellness Wednesday” (详情请见 http://www.yorku.ca/scld/healthed/signatureevents.html ) 也可以访问约克学生团体与领导才能培养网页(York SC&LD):http://www.yorku.ca/scld

    * 参加Tait McKenzie运动中心的课程(见上页)。

    * 参加约克大学其它学生组织的活动,以下有一个不完全的列表,仅供参考: http://www.yorku.ca/scld/organizations/clubs.php?category=Cultural&key=&alpha=&clubsearch=Search

    * 访问你研究领域的约克本科大一课程,并与这些课程的教授、研究生以及本科生见面。英语语言学院有一系列的课程安排为学生提供访问机会。参加这样的课程和访问会对你的学术英语词汇有很大的帮助。研究生预科的学生可以非正式地参加约克更高级别的课程,在教授的允许下,还可以参与课程作业。

    * 与英语语言学院的教授、毕业学生和校友在研究生预科的课堂上交流目前各个专业的研究生学习的现状。

    * 参加一年一度的Schulich “文化圈”活动: 与Schulich商学院的MBA和iMBA学生在他们宿舍见面。这个活动是为了展示Schulich不同的文化(以及饮食)。请参见http://gbc.schulich.yorku.ca/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=93

    * 去“Peace by Peace”学生组织当志愿者。这个学生组织经常去当地的小学并给五年级的学生讲解如何应对欺凌行为。经过有经验的志愿者15小时的培训,挑选出来的志愿者将每周一次与其他志愿者(非研究生预科的学生)去这些小学。详情请见: http://sites.google.com/a/pxpyork.org/inspire

    * 参加约克在读学生与校友社团 “YorkisU” ( http://www.yorkisu.ca ) 以及参加约克一年一度的大型盛典“多元文化周”。2008年有超过11000学生、50余个学生文化俱乐部参加,包括阿富汗、越南学生协会。参见:http://www.yorku.ca/yfile/archive/index.asp?Article=10018

    * 参加多伦多活跃的专业讲故事团体的活动 ( 参见: http://www.storytellingtoronto.org/Pages/Fridays.html ) 以及他们团体一年一度的庆祝活动 (参见:http://www.torontofestivalofstorytelling.ca ). (用英语)讲故事作为一种技能对你的研究生专业申请和你的英语学习非常有帮助。作为研究生预科的一部分,我们将邀请讲故事的专业人士到课堂上来帮助你学会如何有效地陈述经典故事和你个人的故事。

    * 参加多伦多大学两周一次的业余卡拉OK晚会OISENOISE (参见 http://www.geordiewilson.com/oisenoise.html )

    8. 交通

    尽管约克大学位于多伦多北边,却是这个区域的交通枢纽,各条公交线路连接着市区与郊区。在研究生预科课程前期,辅导老师会帮助学生了解公共交通系统,价格以及如何购买车票或交通卡等等。(在大多伦多地区的各个区域都有各自的“唐人街”。)

     9. 访问安大略高校

    就读于研究生预科和约克大学的一个优势就是开车从约克大学出发,2小时以内能够到达12所大学,去其它高校访问就变得十分便捷,这些高校大部分在100公里以内。作为项目内容的一部分,我们会依据学生的兴趣和方向选择安排去高校访问。

Welcome, new YP3 students!

The York Pre-Graduate Preparation Program (YP3) at YUELI is designed for anyone who is interested in attending graduate studies at North American universities. ?

We believe that York University in Toronto is an especially good place to locate such a program.? Among Canadian universities, York’s reputation is built on its programs in business, political science, media, and fine arts.? The university has especially sought to foster a university-wide culture of interdisciplinary work, combining traditional areas of study and research into new combinations.? These aspects of York’s mission can be helpful in showing YP3 participants a wider range of possibilities for their futures.?

More importantly for YUELI and YP3, however, York is among the most diverse universities in North America: York students come from 172 different countries, and fully two-thirds of the York academic community – international students, domestic students, and professors – speak languages other than English in their homes.? Combined with York undergraduate students’ strong culture of clubs, volunteerism/community service, and personal networking, this makes York an especially good place to meet and make friends with people from other cultures.

There may be no better academic environment in the world to study and practice intercultural communication.? We hope that you will come with a spirit of adventure, ready to join the York community, enjoy the coming seven months, and take full advantage of the opportunity YP3 offers to gain useful international and intercultural experience.

I: Before getting here

IMPORTANT:

Before you come to Canada, you will need to gather a number of official documents that have to be submitted with your graduate school applications.? Typically, these will include, at least, official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have attended, diplomas or certificates, and letters of recommendation.

Be aware that required documents may need to be translated, notarized, sealed, and/or, if possible, sent directly from your undergraduate institution to your target programs at their request, by mail or electronically.? Further, as you can expect to send applications to multiple programs (6-12 in total), you may need multiple copies.

We strongly advise incoming YP3 participants to look at the website for World Education Services at http://www.wes.org/students/ and consider making use of its credential evaluation service as part of your strategy for applying to North American graduate schools.

Note also that, typically, graduate program application deadlines for fall entry can come as early as November of the previous year, with many deadlines occurring in January, February, and March.? Participants arriving in January who want to start in the Fall of 2010 should gather as much information about their interests as they can before they come – we will have to start fast!?

Be sure to bring with you:

1. A Valid Passport and Study Visa

YP3 participants must have a valid passport at the start of the academic program in Canada. If your passport will expire before the end of this program, you should start the process to renew your passport six months before the expiry date.? You will also need to know how to keep your visa current if necessary

2. Official Academic Transcripts

Official academic transcripts may include original, official, native language transcripts listing all completed courses and grades.  English translations must accompany non-English transcripts.  It is common for graduate programs to want to request these transcripts directly from your undergraduate institution.? You will need to know if this is possible, and, if it is, how long the process will take.

3. Degree Diploma or Certificate

It is more common for target programs to request this document from you in your application.? Although it is usually possible to use notarized copies, you will need to know if you can get multiple official copies.

4. Letters of Recommendation

Typically, today, a graduate program will request 2-3 letters of recommendation (also called letters of reference) in an application.? These should be letters from professors who have worked with you, in coursework or as advisors to your thesis.? M.B.A. programs may also request at least one professional reference: a letter from an employer describing your performance in a real, paid, work experience? ?Letters need to be in English or in a notarized translation.

Standard practice for letters of recommendation has been that you submit them with your application, in envelopes sealed and signed across the back by your professor for confidentiality.? Today, however, many programs ask for email addresses of recommenders, so that the programs can contact recommenders directly.? You will need to determine if this is possible for you and let your recommenders know that it may happen.

5.? Writing Sample

Depending on the major, programs often ask for a sample of original written work: a paper demonstrating how the applicant works with a body of literature or builds an argument.? Typically, the sample paper is from a university course completed within the past five years.? The length may be as short as 3 pages or as many as 12 pages.? In preparation for joining YP3, you should gather a few possibilities for such a sample – noting that a writing sample can often be an excerpt from a longer work.? In YP3, we will work with editing and presenting such a work to best advantage.

6. Checklist of Other Needs:

  • Make copies of passport, visas, and medical prescriptions. Give one set to a contact person and keep one set;
  • Bring plugs, power strips, and adaptors;
  • Bring laptop with a wireless adaptor or bring a USB wireless adaptor ; and
  • Make a back up soft copy for all required material.

7. Clothes to Bring:

  • An umbrella
  • A warm spring or fall jacket
  • A warm winter coat
  • Winter boots, hat, gloves
  • Cultural clothing or more formal ???wear for special occasions.
  • Warm sportswear for outdoor activities
  • Comfortable walking shoes

Be prepared to dress in layers. In the summer you will wear light clothing during the day, but in the evenings you will need a light jacket or sweater.

II: Once you are here

Here are some tips to help you stay healthy, successful, and sane during this seven month program.

1. Residence Information

At the start of YP3, participants will probably stay in one of the undergraduate dormitories on the York University campus, within walking distance of classrooms, gym facilities, on-campus restaurants, student centers, libraries and computer labs. ??Theses facilities have single rooms, with common areas including refrigerators and microwaves. YUELI staff members will offer new applicants help with residence forms, surveys and payment forms.? Residence cost is CA $25 per day.? While living in residence, participants will be issued the YU-Card, which is York University’s ID and campus debit card.? Note that this card will be charged with a nonrefundable sum of $625 for the initial two-month residence period. The money can only be spent in restaurants on campus and in York Lanes, the on-campus mall.

2. Opening a Bank Account

International students may find it helpful to know that there are banks located on campus and various bank machines. Note that you may need to get a VISA or MasterCard to buy things online, make payments, or register for universities.

3. Renting an Apartment

After learning their way around campus and Toronto, participants may prefer to move out of residence and rent their own apartments. ?Early in the YP3 program participants will attend a workshop given by FMTA (the Federation of Metro Tenants Associations), a non – profit organization that educates tenants about their rights and advocates for tenants in Toronto.? This workshop is designed to help students learn about Toronto rental laws and regulations and prepare them to make informed choices. See http://www.torontotenants.org/

4. Eating on Campus

One of the most difficult things about arriving in a new country can be finding familiar food – and healthy food – to eat.? Especially for participants living in campus residences, this can be a challenge.? At the same time, the stresses of going through such an important, change-filled period of your life make eating well particularly important.? Early in the YP3 program participants will attend a workshop given by the York Health Education and Promotion Group (an organization of York undergraduate students in health-related majors), in order to gain information about how and where to find good food on campus and off, and how to prepare it.? See ?http://www.yorku.ca/scld/healthed/? YP3 staff will also help participants find and get to appropriate grocery stores in Toronto.? See http://www.yorku.ca/yorkint/intlstud/new/grocery.htm for a list of some places to shop for food.

5. Gym Memberships

One of the best ways to handle the stress of studying in a new country is to make sure that you get enough physical activity.? In fact, a seven-month stay at York may give you time to accomplish new fitness goals of your own.? Although it may seem that your schedule is already full, many of us believe that when you exercise regularly, you gain more efficiency from the increased energy than you lose in time. ?York University has a sizeable gym, with memberships available at a cost significantly below that of private health clubs in Toronto.? YP3 participants can buy an eight-month membership at the Tait McKenzie Centre at the “Category B – Community” rate (YUELI students are not charged the fees that York degree students are charged to support this facility):

Note that instructional classes in Sports, Martial Arts, Aquatics, Dance and Mind-Body Fitness, as well as certification courses, fitness assessments, and personal training are offered for an additional fee.? These can be a great way to get into the York community, meet people, and make new friends.? See http://www.recreation.yorku.ca/operations/hours.htm

6. Insurance

Adequate health insurance is an absolute necessity for any extended study period abroad.? YUELI works with the insurance company Student Guard to provide coverage for its students. Once you buy your insurance, you will not pay for many medical expenses.? We advise you to take careful note of what your health insurance covers and what it does not, and how the system works. The policy wording is available in the YUELI office, email yueli@yorku.ca; you can also investigate Student Guard on-line at http://www.studentguard.com

7. Opportunities to Get Involved at YUELI, at York, and in Toronto

An important part of your experience in YP3 will be the contacts you make outside of our program, at York and in Toronto.? These contacts – people you meet, experiences you have – may help you practice your English, help you learn about North American university culture, and may even become items you can add to your c.v. to help your application prospects.? YP3 instructors will be willing to adjust your class schedule to allow for your participation in especially useful activities.? Groups and activities YP3 participants have found have included:

  • Joining in the club and trip activities that are part of the experience of YUELI’s many other programs, and meeting YUELI students from many other countries.
  • Joining classes at the Tait McKenzie athletic centre (see above).
  • Visiting York first-year undergraduate courses in your area of study, and meeting professors, graduate students, and undergraduates in these courses.? YUELI has an arrangement with a number of such courses on the York campus to allow for these visits.? Attending such courses and meeting these people can be a great way of helping your academic English vocabulary.? Some YP3 students have been able to join – informally – more advanced course at York, with the permission of the professor, and to participate in coursework.
  • Meeting professors, graduate students, and alumni of YUELI in visits to YP3 classes to discuss the current state of graduate study in a variety of disciplines
  • Attending the annual Schulich “culture crawl”: an evening of meeting students in the M.B.A. and I.M.B.A. programs at the Schulich School of Business at York University in their residences.? This event is designed to showcase the different cultures (and cuisines) of the many different cultures represented at Schulich.? See http://gbc.schulich.yorku.ca/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=93
  • Volunteering for the student organization “Peace by Peace.”? This is a student organization that travels to local primary schools and gives presentations to grade 5 students on how to respond to bullying behavior.? After fifteen hours of training with experienced volunteers, selected participants commit to 11 once-a-week visits to schools, in teams with other, non-YP3 student volunteers.? See http://sites.google.com/a/pxpyork.org/inspire
  • Attending and participating in activities of Toronto’s active professional storytelling community ( see http://www.storytellingtoronto.org/Pages/Fridays.html ) and that community’s annual festival (see? http://www.torontofestivalofstorytelling.ca ).? Storytelling as a skill (in English) can be very useful in your applications for graduate programs as well as for your English language learning.? As part of YP3, a professional storyteller will be invited to visit your classes and help you learn how to present effectively both traditional and personal stories.

8.? Transportation

Although located at the northern edge of Toronto, York University is a major public transportation hub for the area, connected both to downtown and to outer suburbs by several bus services.? Early in YP3, instructors will help participants learn about this system, how much it costs, where to buy tickets or passes, and where you can go.? (There are a number of different “Chinatowns” in different parts of the GTA.)

9. Visits to Ontario Universities

One of the advantages of YP3 and York is that there are twelve universities within a two hours’ drive of the York campus, making visits to a variety of prospective graduate programs easy.? Most of these schools are within 100 kilometers.? As part of our program, we will arrange visits to some of these schools -- universities chosen according to participants’ program interests and the directions of our applications.

       University                     Location

York University              Toronto
The University of Toronto              Toronto

10. The future beyond YP3

YP3 participants may also want to consider that there are many ways to a future at a quality graduate program in Canada or the U.S., and many ways to gather valuable study and work experience in North America, beyond immediately moving from YP3 to graduate study.? Note that university graduates from other countries who have attained an overall IELTS score of 6.5 are eligible to apply to York as “Visiting Students” and to take many kinds of undergraduate courses at will.? Study at York as a Visiting Student may help you gather prerequisite credits for a graduate program in a new major; at any rate, undergraduate coursework at an English-language university can provide powerful evidence of English proficiency. See http://futurestudents.yorku.ca/requirements/visiting for details of requirements and programs.?

YP3 participants who continue to pursue such alternative ways to a bright future can expect continuing interest from us in YP3 and whatever continuing help we can provide.
